Breast Biopsy in Tacoma, WA

Offering Early Breast Cancer Detection in the South Puget Sound Area

A breast biopsy is a procedure used to observe the tissue of the breast by removing a small sample for additional testing. This procedure is often conducted if there is suspicious activity within the breast tissue that can be detected during an examination like a mammogram, ultrasound scan, or self-examination. We are able to carry out breast biopsies from our five offices in the Puget Sound area.

Types of Breast Biopsies

There are several different ways in which your specialist at Northwest Medical Specialties can complete a breast biopsy. The particular biopsy chosen will depend on the size, location, and characteristics of the abnormality within the breast. These breast biopsy methods include:

  • Core needle biopsy
  • Ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy
  • MRI-guided core needle biopsy
  • Fine-needle aspiration biopsy
  • Stereotactic biopsy
  • Surgical biopsy

What to Expect from a Breast Biopsy

Each of these breast biopsies are relatively simple and do not require anything more than a mild numbing agent to prevent the patient from feeling any pain. The individual will then be able to return home within the same day with only mild discomfort near the incision site.

Tissue samples usually average to be the size of a grain of rice, unless the patient is undergoing a surgical biopsy to remove the entire breast mass in question. Additional anesthetic and resulting stitches may be required if the mass is of significant size.

Preparation for a Breast Biopsy from Northwest Medical Specialties

It is important to understand all of the different kinds of breast biopsies in order to determine which one is best for you. Make sure to discuss all questions about the biopsy with our office, and notify us of any allergies or medications that could interfere with the procedure.

COVID-19 NOTICE

November 16, 2020 Update

IMPORTANT: NO VISITORS
During these difficult times we are making every effort to keep our patients and staff safe from COVID 19, we appreciate your patience and understanding with the changes you may have seen within our practice.

We strive to protect our patients and staff as much as we possibly can from any exposure on our premises.  NWMS has implemented a system wide policy that does not allow anyone in the building that is not a patient and everyone must wear an NWMS provided mask over their mouth and nose during their time on our premises.  This is to protect our vulnerable patients from the unforeseen possibility of exposure to COVID 19 which can be transmitted through aerosol droplets.  Sadly, we have had patients that have died from the complications of COVID 19, which is both devastating and preventable.

We offer a virtual visit option for family, friends, and companions to participate in the care of our patients through Zoom.  Our staff will assist you with every step of the login process and invite you to participate in real time from your vehicle or designated safe space in our building. Please contact us at 253-428-8700 to set this up.
